In 2019, a group of educators, parents, authors, and illustrators formed a team to close the achievement gap by producing a FUNNY chapter book series that features smart, relatable, Black characters.

Big Monty Books Are Designed To:

• Increase Fluency

• Improve Comprehension

• Explode Vocabulary

• Solidify Sight Words

• Promote STEM with Science Experiments at the End of Chapters

• Raises Test Scores

• Relate to Students Who Don’t Like to Read

We raised $25,000, enough money to print 1000 copies of the first book to send to schools across Mississippi. You can see that project here. We also did a dozen INTERACTIVE school presentations.

Guess what happened in the schools where we presented?

We stared getting emails like this:

“Could you please send more books? There is a waiting list for the book in the library.” - Overstreet Elementary

“My child hates to read, but he heard the Big Monty book at school and wants another one. When is the next one coming out?” - A. Martin

“My son loves the book. He uses it as his reading log selection. So happy to find a book about positive Black children with science theme.” - Amazon Review

We knew we hit our mark.

What makes kids better readers? READING!

But, kids think they don’t like to read, which is why the presentations were so important.

We showed children enough of the book that they:

• Knew they could relate to the characters

• Saw that the book was funny and easy enough to read (few words on each page)

• Wanted to know what happened next
